Care Instructions

01Oil the blade after every use. Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade lubricant across the entire blade surface after each use — including inside the Fuller groove. 5160 carbon steel is high-performance but reactive to moisture, so oiling after every use is the single most important maintenance step.

02Wipe clean after every use. Use a clean dry cloth to remove blood, sap, dirt, and moisture from the blade immediately after field use. Pay attention to the Fuller groove where debris can collect. Never leave organic material on the blade.

03Do not store long-term in the leather sheath. Leather retains moisture which causes carbon steel to rust and pit. For long-term storage, oil the blade thoroughly, wrap in a clean dry cloth or plastic bag, and store in a cool dry location separately from the sheath.

04Sharpen with a whetstone. Use a quality whetstone — 400 grit to restore the edge, 1000+ grit to finish to a razor edge. Maintain a consistent 15–20 degree angle. 5160 steel sharpens quickly and holds an excellent edge. A leather strop after sharpening gives a final polished edge.

05Clean the Fuller groove carefully. Use a soft cloth or cotton swab to clean inside the Fuller groove after field use. Moisture and debris can collect in the channel and cause rust if left uncleaned. Oil the groove after cleaning.
